Ugh.

Part of our New Year's resolution was to change our diet: cut out meat, more fruits and veggies, and branch out and try new things.  One of my big, big, big problems is the amount of sugar I consume in a given day.  The actual quantity is undetermined, because if I kept track I'd probably have a heart attack, but let's just say "an assload."  I take a little coffee with my sugar, if you know what I'm sayin'.  So I heard about stevia, and have been dying to get my hands on some.  It was my great white hope, what with being all natural.

Ohmygoditisdisgusting.

I'm trying to get myself to like it, but the aftertaste is just awful.  Seriously awful.  Horrendously awful.  SOUL CRUSHINGLY AWFUL.  But I really want to like it.  I've convinced myself that if I substitute it for sugar in my coffee I will instantly drop 25 pounds, become fabulously rich, have awesome hair, and the mayor will give me a key to the city.  Maybe I have it confused for some other white, powdery substance?

Along the same lines, we bought some goat milk at the store, another first for us, look how cool we are all branching out in our dairy products, right?

We ran out of cow's milk the other day, so Bryan made me a mocha and substituted goat's milk instead.  He told me that if I didn't like it he'd dump it out, but we were out of other milk, so it was that or nothing.  I took a few drinks, but there was a weird taste to it.  I thought maybe it was just me, so I had Phoebe drink some, and she thought it was fine.  Using kids as a litmus test isn't a great idea, though -- Phoebe eats peanut butter with vegetable crackers.  Bleh.

I decided to just try the milk by itself to see if that was the problem.  Bryan brought out a cup and we all took drinks.  I went last (because I'm cautious like that) and felt pretty confident since everyone else seemed fine.  I took a drink.  And then proceeded to gag.  It tasted like someone lit a goat on fire and mixed it with evil.  And I put it in my mouth.  On purpose.  It took all night to get the taste out of my mouth, and right now?  I'm trying not to gag.  Just thinking about it makes me sick.

Maybe if I had broader tastes, and had grown up drinking milk that tasted exactly like a goat smells I wouldn't have such issues.  Maybe I'm just narrow minded.  Maybe I've been corrupted by processed foods like Doritos and Twinkies, but whatever.  I can't stomach things that have lingering aftertastes that make me want to choke myself.

So until they make a sugar substitute that tastes like sugar, and goat's milk that tastes like cow's milk (or sugar!) then I guess we'll just take what we already have, thankyouverymuch.

I too take a little coffee with my cream and sugar. I have no plans to give any of it up.

That being said, I have heard really good things about using agave nectar as a sweetener instead of sugar. I actually have some in my pantry that I had planned to use as a baking experiment one of these days.

I was thinking about trying goat's milk... but now I'm not so sure...

"It tasted like someone lit a goat on fire and mixed it with evil. And I put it in my mouth."

That made me laugh so hard, I almost peed my pants. Really. Gotta go pee now.

I've been having the same battle with diet changes...I'm reading Eat to Live. It's pretty good, makes sense. There's a six week program to help you detox your system, I'm on day two so far so :) The only milk sub I can stand is rice milk and not the vanilla kind. It was a little odd at first but I got used to it fast and now don't like my coffee any other way, plain rice milk with two splenda-worth a try :)

This post was too funny! I kinda want to try Goat milk now. As for coffee; try it black with nothing in it! It's just too simple and you don't need no stinking sugar.

Dude, you are going ALL KINDS of extreme!! Give up meat great! Goat's milk? ABORT! ABORT! Baby steps my dear. Baby steps. Goat's milk is not a baby step!! I do highly recommend soy crumbles though, because they cook up just like ground beef and they taste delicious and you can make tacos and spaghetti sauce and pretty much anything with it. Morningstar and Boca both make them... I bet walmart has them. If you start eating more fruit I bet some of your sugar cravings will go away. Maybe you can train yourself. Instead of eating chocolate, have Bryan make you chocolate covered strawberries and then over time gradually reduce the amount of actual chocolate on them until you are just eating strawberries! Hey, they should make a sugar patch... I am breaking my sugar habit by simply being too poor to afford anything other than ramen and canned soup. I don't recommend this method.

OH, and I have heard good things about the agave nectar also. Another experiment perhaps?! :-)

I'm going to go hunt down some agave nectar. And soy crumbles, I really want to try those. We've had soy milk, and it's not gross, but it's not great. It has kind of a nutty taste, so it doesn't really "go" with everything, if that makes sense. I think it's just that we're so used to cow's milk, so that tastes neutral to us. I should try rice milk, thought, it actually sounds like it would be good.

If you can't find any agave nectar let me know and I'll be happy to send you some. They have it in the regular grocery store here. You have alluded to living out in the sticks (I too lived in the sticks at one time), so I'm not sure what you have available.

Dude, reading posts like this make me fall in love with you all over again. <3

I deeply admire your adventurous attempts. But it's true, "like" sugar, just isn't sugar. It DOES NOT taste like sugar. EVER.

Blech.

OMG! I had read all the great things about Stevia and how fabulous it is. I bought a box of the packets of Stevia in the Raw knowing my life would change, it's awful. I can't get past the aftertaste. No where in anything I read was the aftertaste mentioned. It's just gross.

I've decided to go a more whole foods route and using sugar in the raw. Same amount of sugar but it's less processed. Won't make my ass any smaller but it's healthier right?

OMG that goat's milk description made me gag a little. Goats don't smell good.

try xylitol in place of sugar--it's the closest thing I have found and there is no nasty aftertaste!
